Inspiration

During his recent travels to France and the UK, Managing director David Burbage affirmed his lifelong commitment to masonry. Hand-crafted stone homes, churches and public buildings kept his camera busy, and his trained stonemason’s eye was constantly amazed by the extraordinary skill displayed in every chisel stroke and mortar joint.

“Seeing these buildings that have been standing for centuries was so inspiring”, says David. “While it’s no longer affordable to build entire structures this way, an element of stonework can add timeless character to any modern building.”

Working with New Zealand’s iconic Oamaru Stone, David helps architects and designers to incorporate elements of classic stonework into their work. As you can see from these pictures, window and door frames are perfect targets for his stonemasonry expertise.

David also finds inspiration in New Zealand’s own home of white stone – Oamaru. In the town’s Harbour & Tyne historic precinct, you’ll discover New Zealand’s most complete Victorian streetscape. The large and impressively decorated buildings were constructed from Oamaru limestone more than 120 years ago.
